Step 1: Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care

The first step for many educators is achieving your Cert 3. Obtaining a Cert 3 will allow you to work as an assistant educator in childcare Centers, Preschools, or OOSH. The main focus when starting your journey is gaining hands-on experience, while building foundational knowledge in child development, health, and safety. Many educators choose to study towards their Cert 3 whilst working as this offering a great entry point into the sector.

Step 2: Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care

A natural progression for Cert 3 Educators is achieving a Diploma. Diplomas open the door to more responsibility, including room leader or second-in charge roles. The training covers program planning, curriculum design, and develops leadership skills. Many Centers provide support by funding or part-funding Diploma study whilst you work.

Step 3: Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (ECT)

Having a bachelor’s qualification allows you to work as a degree-qualified Early Childhood Teacher (ECT). This allows you as an ECT to design and implement educational programs, mentor educators, and play a key role in preparing children for school. There is a strong demand for ECTs in Australia, which means excellent job security and career prospects.

Step 4: Leadership & Management Roles

With the above experience, Educators can step into leadership positions such as:

• Centre Director
• Educational Leader
• OOSH Coordinator
• Area Manager or Operations roles

These positions combine teaching expertise with leadership, team management, and strategic planning.
